Charles Eugene Dwyer

Charles Eugene “Gene” Dwyer, age 93 of Troy, formerly of Silex, passed away Monday, July 13, 2015 in Troy. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. , Thursday, July 16 at the Millwood KofC Hall with funeral services at 10:00 a.m. at the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Millwood with Fr. Charles Tichacek officiating. Burial will be in the St. Alphonsus Cemetery with Military Honors being conducted by VFW Post #5553 and Missouri Funeral Honors out of Jefferson Barracks. Gene was born March 25, 1922 in Silex, the son of the late T.A. and Essica Legina (Kimler) Dwyer. On November 16, 1946, at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church , he married Helen Mae Meleganics. She preceded him in death. Survivors include daughters Pam Muensterman of Troy, Jeanne Kirchoff (Ken) of Silex, Sandra Sullivan (Pat) of St. Charles, Karen Clark of Wentzville, Debbie Dawdy (Les) of Macon, Cynthia James (Bill) of Gaffney, SC, Sherry Jerome (Darrin) of Centralia; grandchildren Denise Harvey Suzie Plackemeier, Jessica Downs, Bryan Kirchoff, Scott Kirchoff, Megan Sullivan, Kelly Sullivan, Chad Hull, Johnathon Dawdy, Adam Dawdy, William James, Caitlin Jerome, Bailey Jerome; great grandchildren Lexi Plackemeier; Daniel, Josh and Andrew Harvey; Alison, Abigail and Madeline Kirchoff; Kieran, Mia, Calvin and Ella Sullivan; Callista and Campbell Hull; Easton Dawdy, Pace Dawdy and Haden and Brody Downs. Preceding Gene in death were his parents, grandson Clint Hull, brothers Dick Dwyer, Henry Dwyer and sisters Margaret Pollock, Mary Vivian Moran, Muriel Mudd, and Marion Schroer; son- in- law Art Muensterman. A loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, Gene grew up in Silex and spent his early years on the family farm. He worked in Johnson City, TN prior to enlisting in the US Army. As a radio operator for the Second IndianHead Division, he landed on Normandy Beach two days after ‘D’ Day, and fought in the European Theatre, including the Battle of the Bulge. Gene received numerous citations and honors for his military service. Upon returning from the war, Gene and his brother Quig were the battery of the baseball team, with Gene pitching. For his athletic talents, he was inducted into the St. Charles County Sports Hall of Fame. He owned his own freight company for approximately 20 years, while maintaining a small farm, and raising 7 daughters. He retired from Monsanto as a Master Scheduler. In retirement, Gene traveled, gardened, played golf and ‘tinkered’ in his shop. When macular degeneration impaired his vision, he focused on the love of his family, grandchildren, and friends. There was always a Cardinals game playing in the background. He was the ultimate Cardinal’s fan. Gene will be fondly remembered by all of the lives he touched during his 93 years. He had the gift of making each person he encountered feel like the most important person in the world. Even in his last days, Dad was still ever polite and always kind. He will be missed by many and forgotten by none. Serving as Pallbearers will be grandsons: Bryan Kirchoff, Scott Kirchoff, Kelly Sullivan, Chad Hull, Johnathon Dawdy, Adam Dawdy, and William James. Honorary Pallbearers are granddaughters: Denise Harvey, Suzie Plackemeier, Jessica Downs, Megan Sullivan, Caitlin Jerome, and Bailey Jerome.
