James Stephen "Bear" Roberts

James Stephen Roberts (Bear), 72, of Silex, Missouri, passed away on October 30, 2021 at his home surrounded by his family. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, November 5, 2021 at the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church with Fr. Charles Tichacek officiating. Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 4, 2021 from 3:00 pm until 8:00 pm at the Bibb-Veach Funeral Homes & Crematory in Silex. Bear would be honored if everyone would wear their favorite Cardinal’s attire to the visitation. Cremation rites will follow services. Bear was born October 3, 1949 in St. Charles, Missouri to James and Patricia (Fleming) Roberts. He attended St. Alphonsus Catholic School (K-8) in Millwood and graduated from Silex High School in 1968. In 1971 his pride and joy, David Wayne, was born; he quickly became his best hunting and fishing buddy. Bear and Gail Mudd were united in marriage December 22, 1989 at Silex Presbyterian Church, at which time he gained three daughters. Bear worked at Central Elevator for over 30 years until his retirement in 2002. Bear’s interest and hobbies included fishing, hunting, searching for mushrooms, cracking walnuts and hickory nuts, playing cards with family and friends, listening to country music on KFAV, and taking the grandkids fishing and on mule rides. He also loved making wine with his buddies. Bear was a member of the St. Alphonsus Church and the Knights of Columbus. On numerous occasions Bear was honored to play Santa for the local kids around the community. According to Bear, the Cardinal’s #1 fan, he would have made a better manager than Tony LaRussa. He is survived by his mother, Patricia Roberts; wife, Gail Roberts; son, David Roberts (Tara White); daughters, Stephanie Munro (Mike), Bobbie Tapley (Eric), and Amanda Schwendemann (Aaron); grandkids: Kaitlin and Kyle Tapley; Logan, Jacob and Cody Munro; Claire, Henry and Sophia Schwendemann; and siblings, William Roberts (Bobbie), Gail Striebel (Dennis), and Paul Roberts (Tammy). Bear is also survived by many nieces, nephews, friends, and extended family. Bear was preceded in death by his father, James (Jim) Roberts; brother, David Roberts; nephew, James Ray Roberts; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Nick and Carol Mudd. Pallbearers: Jimmy Angel, Pat Daniels, Kenny Eddy, Scotty Martenson, John Huber, Mike Huber. Honorary Pallbearers: JB Langenecker, John Young, Dick Boden, Bill Schuckenbrock. Donations may be made to St. Alphonsus School or St. Alphonsus Cemetery.
