Funeral services are being held 10:00 a.m. Friday, April 25, 2014 at the First Baptist Church Family Life Center in Vandalia with Rev. Bob Hoehn and Rev. Mike Barter officiating. Burial will be in the Vandalia Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Thursday, April 24, 2014 at the First Baptist Church Family Life Center. Shirley was born December 19, 1932 in Bowling Green to Charles Marshall and Eleanor Margaret Potts Davis. She married Charles C. Forgy on April 8, 1955. He survives. Other survivors include her sister Charlene (Tapley) McCune of Bowling Green; sister-in-law Helen Barrett of Vandalia; nieces Beth (Todd) Whitaker of Terre haute, IN, Victoria (Jeff) Grove of Ellicott City, MD, Meredith McCune of Bowling Green; nephew Boyd Barrett of Vandalia; great nieces and nephew Katherine Whitaker of Kansas City, Madeline and Harrison Whitaker of Terre Haute of IN, and Carter and Kendall Grove of Ellicott City, MD. She was preceded in death by her parents and niece Nancy Linn McCune. Shirley grew up in rural Bowling Green, attended Excelsior Rural School and Bowling Green Schools, graduating with the Class of 1950. She attended the former Kirksville State Teachers College and began her teaching career in the Vandalia School System in 1952. She received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1957 from the University of Missouri. After retiring, Shirley worked part-time at Boatman’s Bank in Vandalia. She was also a member of the First Baptist Church in Vandalia. She taught 4th grade in the Van-Far School System for 36 years. She loved to teach and loved her students. Shirley played the piano and worked with the First Baptist Church Music in Vandalia for over 50 years. Her Sunday School work with the 4 and 5 year olds and the music of her church played an important part in her life. She always gave these talents willingly and with love. Shirley enjoyed helping to mow on her family farm and playing golf. She was a member of Van-Far Retired Teachers, PEO Sisterhood, LaFemme Art Club, St. Cecilia Music Club, Red Hatters and served as a director of the Vandalia Country Club. Shirley organized many Forgy Reunions and gatherings of her Class of 1950. She and Charles loved to travel and took many trips, one very special trip to Germany where Charles served in WWII. Many lives have been touched by this beautiful lady. We are very thankful for having her in our lives.Serving as pallbearers will be Todd Whitaker, Harrison Whitaker, Boyd Barrett, Leon Dempsey, Bob Dunn, Brian Mundell and Donley Morris. Memorials may be given to First Baptist Church in Vandalia, Van-Far Alumni Scholarship Fund, or the Bowling Green R-1 Alumni Scholarship Fund.
