Robert "Bobby" Meyer

January 4, 1946 - November 7, 2019

Robert Meyer Jr. “Bobby”, age 73, of Bowling Green, passed away Thursday, November 7, 2019, at Country View Nursing Home. A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, November 9, at St. Clement Catholic Church, with Fr. Henry Ussher officiating. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to the time of service. Bobby was born January 4, 1946, in Louisiana, Missouri, the son of Mabel Blankenship Meyer and Robert “Bob” Meyer Sr. He was proceeded in death by his parents and infant sister, Betty Jean. Bobby attended the Missouri School of the Deaf in Fulton and was a member of the basketball team. He worked at Don’s IGA in Bowling Green for many years sorting the returnable soda bottles. He took great pride in his work. It was at this time that he formed a very special friendship with David Portwood, who he called “Davie”. When Bobby’s dad died in 1986, it became a ritual that Saturdays were days with “Davie”. You never knew what those two would be up to…from muddin’ in the old yellow jeep to mowing the yard on the John Deere tractor, and some things he didn’t want mommy to know! In 2016, when Bobby’s mother died, he came to live with David and Laura Portwood. He loved living in the country and looking out the windows at the wildlife and taking rides in the country. Bobby often talked about his childhood pet dog, Happy, Grandpa H.B., daddy, mommy and his beloved Uncle Vic. Bobby loved watching his favorite TV shows, and even though he was deaf, loved his music because he could feel the beat and keep time with it, and would even dance from time to time. He loved old barns, tractors, and old cars and trucks. He could tell you every make, model, and year of any vehicle he saw. He always kept an eye out for old camaros and was the first to point them out, because that was Davie’s favorite. He loved watching stock car races, especially when Matthew would race. He loved horses, watching rodeos on TV, and at the Broken P, Bobby could not wait for Paige’s turn to run the barrels so he could cheer her on. Bobby lived to please people and love them. He was so happy to be loved in return. Anywhere he would go, he had that warm hug and smile for everyone. He loved life, and even though he was dealt a tough hand with many challenges, he pushed on. He will be greatly missed by so many. Pall bearers will be David Portwood, Laura Portwood, Matthew Portwood, Darren Portwood, Marty Orf, and Alex Williams. Honorary pall bearers are Helen McCulley, Jason Fowler, Penny Dowell, Jeni Straube and Dana Portwood.
