Sammy Lee Harrelson, Jr. age 66, of New Hartford passed away May 22, 2017 at his home. Memorial services will be held 12:00 p.m., Saturday, June 3, 2017 at the Bibb-Veach Funeral Home in Bowling Green with Rev. Bob Hoehn officiating. Visitation will be held 9:00 – 12:00 p.m., Saturday, June 3, 2017 at the funeral home. Sam was born August 10, 1950 in Curryville the son of Samie Lee and Barbara Ruth Worrell Harrelson. On April 30, 1972 in Bellflower he married Sandra Frye. She survives. Other survivors include son Tim Harrelson (Brandy) of New Hartford; daughter Emily Harrelson of New Hartford; granddaughters Caramia and Josephine Harrelson; brothers David Harrelson (Jerri) of Bowling Green, Charles Harrelson of Columbia, and George Harrelson of New Hartford; Uncle Gerald Worrell of Greenbriar, TN; Aunt Shirley Buffa of the state of FL. He was preceded in death by his parents; paternal grandparents Charlie and Maude Harrelson and his maternal grandmother Angie Beabout. Sam lived in New Hartford most of his life, and was affiliated with the New Hartford Baptist Church. He served in the Army during the Vietnam War obtaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. He earned a Bronze Star for Meritorious Achievement, the Army Commendation Medal, and the Sharp-Shooter Award. As a youth, he farmed for Don Gray and Wayland Wilhoit. Upon returning home from his service, he farmed for Motley Brothers for 30 years, and most recently for himself. From 1998-2016 he worked for the Bowling Green R-1 School District as a maintenance worker, bus barn supervisor and bus driver. Sam was known for his love of John Deere tractors. Memorials may be made to the St. Jude’s Children Hospital, J.B. & Greeta B. Arthur Cancer Center in Mexico or the Pike County Hospice.
