Emily M Smith

Emily M. Smith, age 91, of Bowling Green passed away February 23, 2015 at the Moore Pike Nursing Home in Bowling Green. Funeral services will be 12:00 p.m. Saturday, February 28, 2015 at the Bibb-Veach Funeral Home in Bowling Green with Rev. John Pinkston and Greg Wyble officiating. Burial will be in the Antioch Cemetery. Visitation will be held 10:00 a.m. until time of service Saturday, February 28, 2015 at the Bibb-Veach Funeral Home in Bowling Green. Emily was born July 6, 1923 in Vandalia, the daughter of William and Sally M. Smith. She married Clarence W. (Whistle) Smith on October 26, 1942 in Bowling Green. He preceded her in death on February 1, 1979. Survivors include son Thomas Smith of Bowling Green; granddaughter Cathy Nicholson (Greg) of Louisiana; two grandchildren Dana and Kyle (Rebecca) Nicholson; great grandson Dean Nicholson; nieces and nephews Mike Smith (Joan), Everett Lovell (Carly), Mary Hamilton (Paul), Connie Sue Hoover (Rodger) and Mary Louise Gessman and extended families. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and brother Donald Smith. Emily grew up in Bowling Green, where she lived most of her life except for 4 years when she lived in Albuquerque, NM when Clarence served in the Army Air Corp. during WWII. While in Albuquerque Emily served as a clerk typist for the United States Government while her husband served his country. After returning to Bowling Green, Emily and Clarence owned and operated the Steak House restaurant. She later served as a bookkeeper for LaCrosse Lumber in Louisiana. Emily was a member of the United Methodist Church in Bowling Green where she served as a Sunday school teacher. After her retirement, she served as a lay pastor, serving the Methodist Churches of Bowling Green, Eolia and Oak Grove. She was a local and county 4-H leader, a member of the Hill and Hollow Club of Vera, as well as the VFW Local #5553 Ladies Auxiliary where she served as chaplain for many years. She enjoyed embroidery and sewing and other needle crafts. She was known for being an excellent baker and enjoyed making wedding cakes. When she lived on the farm, Emily enjoyed raising registered Polled Hereford cattle. Above all, she enjoyed spending time with her family. Serving as pallbearers will be Tom Owens, Mike Smith, Paul Hamilton, Bill Finnerty, Everett Lovell and Joe Schuckenbrock. Honorary pallbearers will be Greg Nicholson, Greg Tipton, Dave Boston, Paul Hamilton Jr. and Rodney Elliott. Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Church, Hospice of Choice or Donor’s Choice.
