Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m., Monday, September 9, 2013 at the Mudd-Veach Funeral Home in Bowling Green with Father Patrick Crane officiating. Burial will be at the St. Clement Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 pm, Sunday, September 8, 2013 with a rosary service being held at 7:30 p.m. He has fought the good fight, battling esophageal cancer for 21 months. He will be fondly remembered by his faithful wife, Joyce, whom he married on September 6, 1975. Also his seven INCREDIBLE children, Ted, Laura (Brandon) Ruth, Lisa, (Robert) Wommack, Ben (Sara), Doug (Cassie Bogue), Joseph (Sarah), Sara Beth (Ben Hoitink). Also, his beautiful grandchildren, Alexis, Benton, Dominic, Isabella, Megan and Lucy Wommack and John and Zoe Hummel. Herman will also be remembered by brother Julius (Betty Jo) Hummel of St. Peters, Robert (Diane) Hummel of Jefferson City, Martin (Mary Ellen) Hummel of Russelville, Christopher (Bridget) Hummel of Bowling Green, and John Hummel (Catherine) of Russelville; sisters Mary Anna (Edward) Sick of Bowling Green, Blandina Miller of Jefferson City, Teese (Eugene) Niemeyer of Bowling Green, Dorothy Andrae of Columbia, Eva (Robert) Jones of Millersburg. He was preceded in death by his parents Julius and Marie Deters Hummel, an infant grandson, two nephews, Jeffrey and Patrick Sick, and a niece, Theresa Catherine Hummel. Everyone that knew him was aware of his ability to fix and repair anything he put his hands on. Once again that sheer determination came through to keep working on something until it was operating smoothly. Mr. Hummel served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Bremerhaven, Germany from September 25, 1964 to July 6, 1967. He was a member of St. Mary Magdelene Chapel in Mexico and a 3rd degree member of K of C #1928. He was no stranger to hard work and many times worked past meal time to finish a task. He loved working on his cousins farm, and the land that was originally owned by his beloved Grandpa Deters. He’d often come home from being on the road driving a truck, just to help get the crops in or out of the field. Herman owned his own big rig, a blue Mack Truck and hauled a dedicated run from Iowa to Palmyra, MO for four years. He worked out of Clarksville, and Louisville, NE hauling bulk cement for Transwood Trucking from 1992 until his illness kept him from working. Herman loved his family, the farm, watching Nascar, and RFD-TV. He could always tell you what the weather was going to do; he loved talking to his boys and nephews about their cars, trucks, baseball and how things were going for them. He will be greatly missed by all. Serving as pallbearers will be Ted Hummel, Ben Hummel, Doug Hummel, Joseph Hummel, Robert Wommack and Ben Hoitink. Honorary pallbearers will be Benton Wommack, Pat Deters and Brad Deters. Memorials may be made to Gloria Dei Academy or the St. Clement Cemetery Association.
