Mary Kathryn Oberman

***A Rosary will be prayed at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Clement, followed by speakers and special music selections. We will then proceed with Mass at 10:00 a.m. *** Mary Kathryn Oberman, 68, of New Hartford, passed away peacefully Wednesday, October 9, 2024, at St. Joseph Hospital West in Lake St. Louis surrounded by her family. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, October 15th at 10:00 a.m. at St. Clement Catholic Church with Fr. Henry Ussher officiating. Burial will be in St. Clement Cemetery. A memorial visitation will be held Monday, October 14th from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Bibb-Veach Funeral Homes and Crematory in Bowling Green. Mary was born May 22, 1956, in Louisiana, Missouri to Edward and Mildred (Siemer) Scherder. She was united in marriage to Gary Wayne Oberman on June 17, 1977, at St. Clement Catholic Church. Gary survives. Also surviving are daughters, Wendy Straube (Jason) of New Hartford, Brandy Harrelson of New Hartford, and Cori Dempsey (Shaun Walker) of Bowling Green; grandchildren: Levi Summers, Zila Summers, Terron Summers, Danielle Summers, Austin Ingle, Kyle Straube, Jessi Ingle, Jayce Straube, Caramia Harrelson, Josephine Harrelson, Bella Dempsey, Rhett Walker, and Chris Hagan; brothers, Terry Scherder (Colleen) of New Hartford, Daniel Scherder (Marine) of Richmond, Virginia, John Scherder (Sandy) of Frankford, and Joe Scherder (Julie) of Creve Coeur, Missouri; brother-in-law, Randy Battas; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family. Over the years, Mary was also a grandma to many foster children and was a second mom to many of her daughter’s friends. Mary was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Rose Battas; and grandson, Oliver Harrelson. Mary grew up and spent her whole life in Pike County. She attended St. Clement grade school and graduated from Bowling Green High School in 1974. She then attended three years of the RN program at Blessing School of Nursing. Mary was employed with Ruth Jensen Village for over 50 years, starting when she was still in high school. She also worked as an ER Nurse at Pike County Memorial Hospital. Mary was a devout member of St. Clement Church where she served as a Eucharistic Minister and took Communion to the sick. She was also a member of Ladies Sodality and taught CCD classes, Confirmation classes, and Bible School classes. Mary was a founding member of Options for Women and the Pike County Pro-Life Club. She had been a member of the Potpourri Club. Mary enjoyed being around people and helping anyone however she could, without any recognition. Mary’s favorite thing to do was decorating sugar cookies or cakes with her girls and grandchildren, and watching any program or sporting events her daughters or grandchildren participated in. She also loved hosting family gatherings and made an amazing turkey pot pie the day after Thanksgiving. She adored her children and grandchildren and supported them in any way she could. She often helped drive the grandkids to their events, referring to her vehicle as her “Grandma Bus.” Mary was a kind, caring person with a heart of gold. She will be missed by everyone who was blessed to know her. Pallbearer will be Levi Summers. Honorary pallbearers are Zila, Terron, Caramia, Josephine, Bella, and Rhett. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pike County Home Health and Hospice, the Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance, or St. Clement Church.
